Opening to the Flow of Essence

March 28, 2025

The French philosopher Henri Bergson taught that life was more than mere existence—it is driven by a vital energy that gives it meaning by propelling us toward something greater. He called this force the élan vital.

The life force energy that animates us has been described in many traditions. In Hawaiian indigenous culture, it is mana; in Hinduism, kundalini; and in Christianity, the Holy Spirit. Perhaps in its deepest essence, it is the spirit or soul—the power behind our passion, consciousness, and existence. In a profound sense, we are that energy, that élan vital.

Spiritual awakening begins with the realization that we are not separate from this vital force—we are it. The next step is surrendering our hearts to the boundless spiritual possibilities illuminated by this living energy within us.

The source of this life energy is existence itself—a field of pure potential before it takes any form. In its ultimate essence, nothing is yet distinct. All possibilities exist in an undifferentiated wholeness. From this unity, the adventure of manifestation begins.

The first creations to emerge are elemental forces: love, goodness, beauty, and truth. However, creation is dualistic—nothing arises alone. With love comes fear, with goodness comes evil, with beauty comes ugliness, and with truth comes deception.

As manifestation unfolds, these elemental forces take on more defined forms. Love diversifies, as do goodness, beauty, and their opposites. These distinctions make them more comprehensible and tangible, allowing them to interact and influence one another.

The journey of creation continues until pure potential condenses into material reality, multiplying into an infinite array of physical forms. Human beings are one such form, animated by the energy of existence, though we may not always realize it.

Some of us, at some point, awaken to the realization that we are not just living beings—something is living through us. This recognition brings a profound sense of connection to the wholeness from which we emerged. We seek to recreate this wholeness in our lives, only to discover that it must first be found within our own hearts and minds. The spiritual journey begins when we recognize that what we seek externally must be realized internally.

As we continue on this path, our desire for wholeness becomes clearer. We come to understand that we exist not only in the physical world but also within a subtle inner reality—one step closer to the energetic source of existence. By opening ourselves to this inner world, we allow more life force to flow through us.

Navigating this inner journey requires attunement. Spiritual growth is delicate, demanding alignment on all levels—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The alignment of our whole-being is the essence of spiritual practice.

As our path unfolds, we witness miracles in our lives. We perceive things we never noticed before, become sensitive to previously imperceptible energies and emotions, and gain knowledge and abilities that once seemed impossible. When we open the flow of energetic essence within us, the unimaginable becomes possible.
