When you meditate you settle like a leaf that has fallen from a tree, slowly moving toward the ground, landing, and rocking to stillness. It’s important to remember that resting is not an activity. Resting is not something you do. It's something you fall into. When you meditate, you disengage from activity. You don't do anything and rest naturally occurs.
Those of us who are seeking to live a more awakened life need to know that spiritual growth only occurs when we are at rest. We can learn actively and we can develop skills actively, but spiritual growth is not knowledge or a skill that we gain through effort. Spiritual growth occurs in invisible realms beyond the reach of our conscious awareness.
Growth happens in the silence of rest.
When you rest in meditation, you simply rest, not in order to accomplish anything, not even to grow and awaken. You just rest and that's when all the magic happens.
It's easy for us to relate to meditation as if it were a means for generating spiritual growth and awakening. It's very difficult for us to give our energy to something that doesn't feel purposeful. If we are going to devote time and effort to meditation we want to know why. We want to know what result we are working toward.
Meditation is not purposeful that way. It doesn't lead anywhere. We rest and discover that growth happens, not because of anything we consciously did. In fact, we often look back and marvel at how it occurred almost as much in spite of our efforts as because of them.
When awakening occurs it's because invisible forces that have been at work behind the scenes have finally gained enough momentum to burst through into conscious awareness. Any awakening we see is the result of influences that have been building for a long time.
In meditation we don’t do anything, we don’t make any effort and we use no energy, so all of our energy is free to support the unseen processes where true awakening is constantly being generated. Meditation is not something we do to awaken ourselves.
The process of awakening is already alive in you. It is working in the most profound sensitivities of your unconscious mind, and moving as a deep tenderness in the invisible core of your heart.
The momentum of awakening is streaming into you from lifetimes you no longer remember, from other dimensions of reality that you cannot see and from hosts of benevolent beings conspiring on your behalf.
The process of awakening is already alive within you. It is already happening. And you have the opportunity to contribute your energy to that process. All you need to do is not do, make no effort, unconditionally stop, so that all of your energy becomes available to fuel the unseen process of awakening that is already alive within you.
