I am 62 years old, and when I was 29 I made a very clear decision about how I wanted to live my life. I committed myself to following a spiritual path and to making spiritual fulfillment the central aim of my life. This did not mean abandoning other interests or responsibilities, but it did mean that whenever there was a choice to be made, progress on the path would take priority.
Looking back over the past thirty-two years, I can see how powerful that single decision has been. Again and again, when life presented competing possibilities, I chose to remain aligned with my deepest spiritual intention. What I discovered is that this kind of consistency matters. Over time it shapes the entire arc of a life. For me, it has led to a life filled with spiritual realizations, breakthroughs, and an ongoing process of inner development.
A genuine spiritual path needs to provide several essential elements. It must offer a clearly defined goal so that we understand what the journey is leading toward. It must present an ontological and epistemological framework that explains the nature of reality and how we come to know it. It must include a set of practices that support real progress along the path. And finally, it must offer guidance for how to engage with the world outside of formal practice, because the true test of any spiritual path is how it transforms the way we live.
I have been teaching since 1995, and over the years my own understanding of the path has continued to evolve. Gradually I found myself articulating a vision of the spiritual journey that integrates these elements in a coherent way. Today I refer to that articulation as transdimensional spirituality and in this essay I will present the essential elements of that path.
Goal:
Transdimensional spirituality rests on the recognition that our existence extends far beyond the narrow band of awareness we ordinarily inhabit. There are many dimensions of our being that remain outside our conscious experience. The aim of this path is to awaken to those deeper dimensions and gradually become fully embodied, awake, and alive within the whole of our being.
Ontological Framework:
In transdimensional spirituality, reality is understood to be vast and multidimensional. The familiar dimensions of time, space, and mind that structure our ordinary experience represent only a tiny fraction of the whole. In truth, we exist across many dimensions of being simultaneously, even though we are usually awake and aware only within the narrow band of reality that our everyday consciousness reveals.
Epistemological Framework:
On this path you are encouraged to discover the multidimensional nature of reality through direct experience rather than abstract belief. In the same spirit, you are invited to pursue self-knowledge in all dimensions of your own being.
Practices:
Many practices have the potential to support a transdimensional awakening. In transdimensional spirituality, however, two practices are foundational: the meditative practice of conscious contentment and the mystical practice of spiritual attunement.
Guidelines for Living:
When engaging with the world outside of formal practice, the path of transdimensional spirituality encourages us to cultivate an attitude of spiritual abundance. From this inner orientation arises a deep sense of gratitude and a focus on the art of possibility, through which we bring our access to higher dimensions to bear in a creative response to whatever each moment presents.
Over the past few years, the value of the path of transdimensional spirituality has become increasingly evident in my own life. I can see how following this path, as faithfully as I am able, continues to open me to deeper dimensions of my being in an ongoing journey of discovery. At the same time, I find myself meeting each moment with a growing openness that allows me to respond creatively to whatever life presents.
I am aware of a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment within me that often leaves me feeling perfectly content with the way things are. It is a profound sense of being at home in the mystery of existence. There remains an ongoing awareness of the immensity of reality and a natural desire to expand into it, yet without any sense that something is missing. It is a radical and effortless acceptance of life as it is.
I believe that anyone who follows this path in earnest can discover the same depth of spiritual fulfillment. Ultimately, this is why I feel called to share this path with anyone who feels drawn to it.
